New generation double deck trains will begin rolling onto our railways from 2019, transforming intercity travel for customers in Newcastle, the Central Coast, South Coast and the Blue Mountains.
Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance today signed a $2.3 billion contract to build and maintain more than 500 new carriages.
“For customers travelling more lengthy trips, these trains will be more spacious, more comfortable and have features never before seen on our long distance services,” Mr Constance said.
New features on the intercity fleet will include:
- Charging stations for mobile devices on each seat
- Two by two seating on upper and lower levels
- Wider, fabric-covered seats with arm rests and more space
- Cup holders and tray tables
- Dedicated space for luggage, prams, bicycles and wheelchairs
- Accessible toilets
- Digital screens and announcements
“We want to encourage people out of cars and that’s why we want these trains to offer the next level of comfort and convenience for those commuting a long way,” Mr Constance said.
The new fleet will include modern CCTV surveillance technology, help points and digital screens and announcements to ensure a safe and secure journey.
Customer feedback has been an important part of the early design process for the new trains and will continue to inform decisions as the design of the new trains is finalised.
The first train is expected to be delivered in 2019. The new intercity fleet will be built by RailConnect which is a joint venture between the Hyundai Rotem Company, Mitsubishi Electric Australia and UGL Rail.
